KG Core Subjects
KG students study all three core subjects: READ, LEARN and WRITE in their timetable everyday. Each subject has smaller subjects within them too. Here is a quick explanation of what each subject is all about.
LEARN:
This subject has three parts - MY WORLD, NUMERACY and CONCEPTS.
- In MY WORLD, students study different things about the world around them. This is a mix of Social Sciences and General Science.
- In CONCEPTS they learn about shapes, colours, comparisons in different aspects etc.
- In NUMERACY they get comfortable with numbers and then do various operations on them orally and mentally. They also understand and solve word problems.
WRITE:
This subject has two parts - ENGLISH and MATH
English
- In Nursery: They start with writing capital letters.
- In Junior KG: They move on to lowercase letters and small words and phrases.
- In Senior KG: They move on to bigger words and sentences and paragraphs.
Math
- Nursery: They start with recognizing and then writing numbers and doing the most basic operations like counting and comparing.
- Junior KG: They then move on to a bigger range of numbers and do more operations on them and even learn how to move forwards and backwards between numbers. They also do basic addition and subtraction.
- Senior KG: Then they move on to a bigger range and do more operations. They also get comfortable with skip counting.
READ:
This is a very intensive subject that we take very seriously and do in a different way.
- Nursery: We start with phonic sounds of letters and teach them the letters in a frequency based order so they start reading words right from the first unit itself. They are able to read quite a lot of three lettered words that follow letter phonics by the end of Nursery itself. While they are doing this, they are also taught sight words so that they can start reading simple stories.
- Junior KG: We start with CVC words and then move on to beginning and ending blends. They get to read a lot many longer words too. While they are doing this, they are also taught more sight words and some non phonic words too, so that they can read more stories.
- Senior KG: We teach the students how to read words with consonant clusters at the start and at the end. They get quite comfortable with reading by this stage and can tackle unfamiliar words too. They read much higher level stories at this stage. Most of the class gets to the reading level of Std. 2.
