Open Book English Exams

In English summative exams, Walnut uses open-book assessments for certain sections of the paper.

  • For Std. 1 and Std. 2, the relevant textbook passage is printed directly in the question paper.
  • For Std. 3 to Std. 8 (Std. 8 in Unit 1 and 2 only), students are given the NCERT English textbook during the exam, and text-based questions can be answered by referring to the lesson in the book.

The purpose of this approach is to shift the focus of the exam from memorising plot details and story-specific content to demonstrating strong language skills. Students are evaluated on:

  • Clarity of expression
  • Grammar and language accuracy
  • Ability to understand and interpret the text
  • Quality and structure of written responses

Because students do not need to memorise the story itself, teachers can cover more material during the unit and spend more time strengthening reading comprehension, vocabulary and writing skills.

This also reflects the structure of the CBSE English board exam, where nearly 38% of the paper consists of comprehension passages, both seen and unseen.

Students who read carefully and understand the lesson well still have a clear advantage, because the exam evaluates interpretation, language accuracy and quality of expression.

By exposing students early to open-book formats and comprehension-based evaluation, Walnut ensures that students develop the language skills that the board examinations ultimately expect.

Once the Std. 10 syllabus begins, textbooks are no longer provided during exams so that students are fully prepared for the board examination format.
