Reference Sheets for Social Studies Exams (Std 6–8)
To help students move beyond memorisation and develop better study habits, Social Studies summative exams in Std 6 to 8 include the use of a student-prepared reference sheet.
Before each exam, students prepare a personalised A5 reference sheet while studying the unit. This sheet may include key points, timelines, maps, diagrams or structured notes that help them organise the information from the chapter.
Students prepare separate reference sheets for the Practice Test and the Unit Test. During the exam, they are allowed to refer to their own sheet while answering questions.
This method blends note-making, revision and real-time application. Instead of rote memorisation of large amounts of content, students learn how to:
- Identify key ideas
- Structure information clearly
- Summarise chapters effectively
- Use their notes intelligently while answering questions
Even if a student chooses not to refer to the sheet during the exam, the reference sheet must still be prepared and submitted. The process of organising the information itself is an important part of the learning.
Students who prepare thoughtful and well-organised reference sheets usually perform better in the exam, because the questions still require them to explain ideas clearly and apply what they have studied.
Modern education frameworks such as NEP 2020 encourage schools to move beyond rote memorisation and help students organise, interpret and apply information. Methods such as structured note-making and guided reference sheets are widely recommended to build these skills. Walnut incorporates such approaches so that students develop stronger understanding and better study habits.
Reference sheets are used only until the Std 10 syllabus begins. Once board exam preparation starts, students transition to the more traditional examination format required for board exams.
