NIOS - Overview
- NIOS is the National Institute of Open Schooling.
- It is a recognised national board under the Ministry of Education, Government of India.
- It gives students more flexibility in subjects, pace of study, exam timing and the order in which subjects are completed.
- NIOS is not for "weak" students. The student still has to appear for 5 core subjects and pass them. But it offers more subject options than the fixed subject pattern of CBSE or State Board. Many students choose it for that reason.
- Some students may not be learning disabled but may still find subjects such as Maths, Science and Social Science very difficult. They are already being given extra remedial help in these subjects. CBSE allows only CWSN candidates to swap subjects. NIOS offers a way for normal students to replace these with other subjects.
- If a student is also quite sure that they do not want to take Science or Maths in Class 11, it may make more sense to use that time to study subjects that suit them better.
- The aim is simple: Help the student understand what they study, stay interested in academics, pass successfully and move ahead with confidence.
