Subjects and studying

NIOS offers a whole range of subjects at the Std 10 level. But at Walnut we have chosen a combination that we will be coaching the students in 5 core subjects + 1 vocational:

• 5 core: English, Marathi, Business Studies, Psychology, Economics
• 1 vocational: Data Entry Operations

(If a student has no aptitude for Marathi, they can choose Home Science instead. We will share learning material, but will not be coaching them in school for it)

A student needs to pass in 5 subjects to clear Std 10. The extra vocational subject gives some additional safety and flexibility. In case a student does not clear 5 core subjects, then the vocational can be substituted in its place.

Why these subjects?

These subjects help the path ahead in Commerce / Humanities (Arts). They are less dependent on difficult Maths, Science or heavy factual learning.

• Business Studies and Psychology are easier to understand through examples and everyday life.
• Economics is useful in general
• Data Entry Operations has a large practical component and is a useful backup subject.

When will these be taught?

• Students will follow the regular timetable in school.
• During Core Periods, they will study these alternate subjects.
• During Sports, Activity periods, Recess they will be with their regular division.

(Presently, struggling students sit with the Remedial teacher for all activity classes. If they take this option, they will get to study in core periods and do activities in the activity period too! Big win and better mental health, right?)

How will these be taught?

• We do not plan to make the student prepare five subjects together as NIOS allows on demand examinations. (Check section on Exams for details)
• We plan to take only one or two subjects at a time, have the students study those, practice, take the exam and clear those and then move on to the next ones.
• This gives the student a chance to focus properly, engage and develop an interest in the subject and do well.

What all will they do in each subject in school?

• Students will do everything. The same sequence they are following will continue. They will get worksheets and material and presentations. They will do a lesson in the class with the teacher, then revision, then try-a-test, revise quizzes. After a few lessons they will have unit tests, then half prelims, prelims and then they will go for the board exam for that subject.
• The students have to study, do homework and parents will be called in if students are not performing or doing the work. Nothing changes in the expectations or the program, only the subjects change and now we do it in blocks. That's all.
